Promoting their sophomore album S.C.I.E.N.C.E., on-the-cusp rockers Incubus made a stop at Metro September 17, 1998, with fellow Californians System of a Down. Drawing from metal-based influences and sprinkled with infectious funk grooves, the band refuted tired comparisons to Red Hot Chili Peppers and Rage Against the Machine by showcasing their musical dexterity and lead singer Brandon Boyd’s uncompromising showmanship. The set was scattered with early hits like “New Skin” and “A Certain Shade of Green” and meandered into Iron Maiden territory with an rendition of “Calgone/Powerslave.”
