When diligent alt-rockers Sonic Youth made the jump to label giant SST Records in 1986, a new sound wasn’t lurking too far behind. The band’s experimental soundscape poems began to invade the mainstream, and they had successfully commenced their musical pilgrimage from the New York underground to indie rock fame. Even with this recent success, their first headlining gig at Metro on October 14, 1987, only filled the room to half-capacity at 582 tickets sold.
